Doctors at Medicover Hospitals successfully solved a rare four-year case by removing an aspirated tooth along with its dental fixture from a patient's lung through a minimally invasive bronchoscopy procedure, bringing relief to a 60-year-old man who had suffered from recurrent pneumonia for years.
When the patient Satyam, a resident of Khammam district approached Medicover Hospitals, he recalled that he had accidentally aspirated a tooth along with the dental fixture several years earlier. A CT scan of the chest revealed the foreign body lodged in the right main bronchus. The pulmonology team removed the tooth along with the dental fixture using flexible bronchoscopy with the help of a Dormia basket.
Dr. Yasaswini Ganjam, consultant pulmonologist mentioned that early recognition of foreign body aspiration is crucial especially when recurrent lung infections do not respond to treatment. The doctors said retained foreign bodies in the airway can remain undiagnosed for years and may lead to repeated infections, chronic cough, bronchiectasis and permanent lung damage if not identified in time.
