Doctors at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) successfully removed a kidney tumor from a six-year-old boy, born with one of the rarest congenital kidney abnormalities-a crossed fused ectopic kidney-using a specialized minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure.
The child was brought to AINU after passing blood in his urine for two days. Investigations revealed a tumor arising in a crossed fused ectopic kidney, an uncommon condition in which both kidneys are fused together and located on the same side of the body. The surgical team employed advanced three-dimensional imaging to map the child's unique vascular anatomy and plan a customized surgical strategy.
Dr. Syed Md. Ghouse, Director - Robotics and Minimal Access Urology, who led the surgical team mentioned that three-dimensional reconstruction, intraoperative ultrasound and ICG fluorescence imaging allowed the doctors to identify the tumor and preserve the healthy kidney. Dr. Mallikarjuna C, Managing Director, Chief Consultant Urologist & Robotic Surgeon, mentioned that using advanced keyhole techniques, the team was able to remove the tumor.
