Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday outlined a grand vision for transforming the state into a global hub for yoga through the 'YogaAndhra-2025' initiative. Speaking at a press conference, the Chief Minister emphasized that yoga should become an integral part of daily life for every citizen and highlighted extensive efforts being made to promote it across the state.
“Yoga is part of India’s cultural heritage, and Andhra Pradesh is now taking the lead to make it a public movement,” said Naidu. He revealed that more than 2.39 crore people had registered to participate in the month-long YogaAndhra initiative, far surpassing the initial target of 2 crore registrations.
As part of the International Day of Yoga celebrations on June 21, yoga sessions will be conducted at 1.3 lakh locations across the state. Naidu stated that, across India, approximately 7 lakh locations will host yoga events, while globally, around 8 lakh venues will participate, demonstrating the universal appeal of yoga.
Special focus is being placed on student participation, with yoga training being proposed from Class 9 onwards, both online and offline. “We are planning dedicated courses and certifications, and also considering introducing yoga as part of the school curriculum,” the Chief Minister said.
In Visakhapatnam, a massive event is being planned along the coast from RK Beach to Bhogapuram, mobilizing over 3.5 lakh people for a synchronized yoga session. A 108-minute Surya Namaskar session involving 3.5 lakh participants is being organized in pursuit of a Guinness World Record. Another 25,000 students from agency areas are expected to participate, contributing to a total of 22 world record attempts.
The state has also launched the ‘Yogi5 Smart Mat App’, which will function as a virtual assistant to both yoga teachers and students. CSR partnerships are being explored to further support district-level yoga outreach. This year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” reflects the holistic benefits of yoga for both individuals and the environment. Naidu also hinted at long-term plans to establish a Yoga Deemed University in the state to institutionalize yoga education and research.
The main yoga program will be held from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM, with formal yoga sessions beginning at 7:00 AM on June 21. The Chief Minister called upon the public to participate enthusiastically, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message encouraging mass involvement in International Yoga Day. “With this initiative, Andhra Pradesh is not just celebrating Yoga Day — we’re laying the foundation for a healthier, disciplined, and globally connected society,” Naidu concluded.
