The Andhra Pradesh government is in plans to expand the ‘Net Zero Hostels’ program to government welfare hostels across the state, following the successful launch of its pilot phase on January 24, 2026. The initiative, inaugurated by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu at the Social Welfare Hostel in Nagari town of Chittoor district, is aimed at transforming student residential campuses into environmentally sustainable, carbon-neutral living spaces. The program forms a key component of the government’s flagship Swachh Andhra-Swarna Andhra vision.
Officials said the pilot project, designed for a seven-year implementation period, is being executed in collaboration with sustainability partner Heartwellness. Based on performance indicators and impact assessment from the pilot phase, the government intends to replicate the model in hostels and residential schools across Andhra Pradesh. Under the pilot, hostels are being transformed through a combination of renewable energy adoption, biodiversity development and resource conservation. Solar power systems, LED lighting and energy-efficient equipment are being installed to reduce electricity consumption. Water usage is being optimized through recycled water systems, constructed wetlands and rainwater harvesting, targeting a 40–70 per cent reduction in freshwater consumption.
Composting of kitchen waste and use of biochar are helping minimize landfill waste. Officials said this approach not only improves the environment but also builds awareness, discipline and leadership among students. The state government said the expansion of the Net Zero program aligns with its long-term climate and education goals. By scaling the initiative across hostels, Andhra Pradesh aims to create a network of climate-resilient welfare institutions while grooming students as responsible environmental citizens.
