Breast Cancer no longer a silent epidemic

17-10-2025 12:00:00 AM

October is globally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month - a time dedicated to spreading knowledge, honoring survivors, and encouraging early detection. Awareness is powerful. It drives change in society, influences policy, and most importantly, saves lives.

In India, breast cancer is now the most common cancer among women. Every year, over 2 lakh women are diagnosed, and tragically, more than 1 lakh lose their lives. One in 24 Indian women is at risk, yet awareness remains dangerously low, especially in rural areas where stigma, shame, and silence persist.

Major factors behind high mortality include lack of awareness, absence of nationwide screening programs, and unequal access to timely treatment. Early detection significantly improves survival rates. Recognizing symptoms such as lumps, changes in breast shape, nipple discharge, or persistent pain is crucial. Regular screenings, mammograms, clinical exams, and self-examinations can catch the disease before symptoms appear.

Treatment varies based on the stage and type, including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and hormone therapies. It’s time to break the silence. Breast cancer is not just a health issue it’s a societal challenge. By raising awareness and promoting early detection, we can reduce the toll of this disease and give hope to millions of women across the country.
