‘10 residential degree colleges planned for women’

Minority Welfare and Public Enterprises Minister Mohammed Azharuddin on Monday informed the Telangana Legislative Council that the State government has prepared a proposal to establish residential degree colleges across Telangana. The proposed colleges will be established in all 10 erstwhile districts of the State to improve access to higher education for students from minority communities and economically weaker sections. Of these, 10 residential degree colleges have been specifically proposed for women, he said.

Highlighting the need to create better educational opportunities for girls, Azharuddin said many young women discontinue their studies after completing Class X or Intermediate. The proposed residential degree colleges are aimed at encouraging such students to pursue higher education, he said. The Minister assured the House that further details of the project would be announced soon. He also said issues relating to Shadi Khanas and other pending matters concerning minority welfare would be addressed at the earliest.

Responding to questions raised by AIMIM MLC Mirza Riyaz-ul-Hasan Afandi, Azharuddin reiterated the government's commitment to expanding Study Circles and Career Counseling Centers across the State. Afandi pointed out that the existing My Study Circle and Career Counseling Centre, established in 2015, remained the only such facility in the State. He urged the government to establish similar centers in other districts, strengthen the existing facility and expedite the proposal for construction of a new building.
