BRS MLC and Telangana Jagruthi president K Kavitha on Monday demanded that the Congress government separate the proposed 10% Muslim reservation from the 42% quota for Backward Classes (BCs).
Launching a 72-hour fast at Indira Park, Kavitha urged the Congress to introduce a separate bill for Muslim reservation instead of including it in the BC quota, citing BJP’s opposition to such inclusion. “Let the Congress clarify its stance. If Muslims are granted a distinct quota, BJP will have no excuse to oppose the 42% for BCs,” she said.
Kavitha accused the government of restricting her protest time from 10 am to 4 pm, far short of her intended 72-hour fast. She plans to approach the High Court for full protest permission. Telangana BC Minister Ponnam Prabhakar responded, suggesting Kavitha take her protest to Delhi, where the final decision lies. He also called on all parties and organizations to unite, akin to the Telangana statehood movement, to push for BC quota implementation.
In March, the Telangana Assembly passed two bills raising BC reservation in education, jobs, and local bodies to 42%. The bills are pending Presidential assent. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and senior Congress leaders will protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on August 6 and meet President Droupadi Murmu on August 7 to urge action on the pending bills.
