Diabetes is not just a condition, it’s a call to action

Millions of Indians are living with a hidden threat: diabetes. According to 2023 data, 101 million have been diagnosed, 44 million remain unaware, and another 136 million are prediabetic. By 2045, the number of diagnosed cases could reach 134.2 million. Diabetes is often called a ‘silent killer’ for a reason. High blood sugar gradually damages blood vessels, slows circulation, and starves vital organs of oxygen.

Nerve damage can leave patients unaware of injuries, while the immune system weakens, making infections harder to fight. Chronic inflammation further strains the body. The consequences are serious: vision loss, heart disease, kidney failure, neuropathy, oral health problems, and even cognitive decline.

Experts stress that early intervention works. Regular blood sugar monitoring, a balanced diet, daily movement, adherence to medication, and routine checkups can prevent complications. Multidisciplinary care—from endocrinologists to nutritionists—improves outcomes significantly. Diabetes is not just a condition; it’s a call to action. Understanding the risk and taking preventive steps now can transform lives, turning a silent threat into a manageable condition.
