On World Diabetes Day, Endocrinologist Dr. Sravya and Diabetologist Dr. Bhavani from Kamineni Hospitals, LB Nagar, highlighted the rising prevalence of diabetes and the measures needed to combat it. Doctors have observed a significant increase in cases among younger individuals, including those aged 15 to 20, a trend rarely seen in the past.
‘The main causes are unhealthy lifestyles, insufficient sleep, physical inactivity, and poor dietary habits, which often lead to obesity,’ said Dr. Sravya. She explained that diabetes manifests in two primary forms: Type-1, where the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin due to certain unknown body changes, and Type-2, which is largely lifestyle-related and can often be managed through diet, exercise, and lifestyle modifications. She advised people to start screening for diabetes from their 30s.
Dr. Bhavani emphasized that maintaining a healthy body is crucial. She added that diabetes testing should go beyond routine pre- and post-meal blood sugar checks, stressing the importance of HbA1c tests, which provide an average blood sugar level over several months, aiding accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning.
