A 42-year-old patient underwent a routine master health check-up, during which an abdominal ultrasound revealed a mass in the left kidney. Further evaluation with a contrast-enhanced CT scan of the abdomen confirmed the presence of a renal tumor. The patient subsequently underwent surgical removal of the left kidney (radical nephrectomy), recovered well post-surgery and is currently doing fine.

Speaking of the disease, Dr. Srinivasa Narayanam, HOD Urology, Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology Dilsukhnagar said that kidney cancer accounts for nearly 2–3% of all adult cancers and an incidence of around 16 per 100,000 population. He mentioned that the treatment depends on the stage and size of the tumor and that survival outcomes vary significantly by stage, with five-year survival rates of 70–90% for tumors smaller than 4 cm.

Importance of early detection

A significant proportion of kidney tumors are detected during imaging studies performed for unrelated reasons. Early detection improves treatment outcomes and survival rates, as localized tumors can often be cured with timely surgical intervention.

This case highlights the critical importance of periodic health check-ups, even in individuals without symptoms or known risk factors.
