Ongole MP Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy and MLA Damacharla Janardhan recently requested the central and state governments to sanction Rs 17 crore under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund for the construction of a bridge over the portion of Buckingham canal in the district.
Many villages in Prakasham District, especially those in Ongole mandal are quite close to Bay of Bengal. However the canal is causing many problem for shrimp cultivators, fishermen and even those going to the beach by walk. The Situation is worse in rainy season.
The local people explained the problem to the Chairperson of National Human Rights Commission Vijayabharathi Saini when she visited that place last year. Ronanki Kurmanath, the director of the state Natural Disaster Management Agency, has written a letter to collector Tamim Ansari seeking a report on the construction of the bridge.On the other hand, about 35 acres of land near the sea shore in Ongole Mandal is vacant. MLA Janardhan took up the feasibility with the state government as it is very conducive for the tourism sector.
As part of this, about 35 acres of vacant land in Thevarampadu Village was inspected recently by joint collector Ronanki Gopalakrishna and RDO Lakshmi Prasanna. On the same route, a site inspection was made for the construction of a bridge over the canal to facilitate the passage from Gundayapalem village to the sea shore. The government has allocated funds for the construction of the bridge and plans are being made to set up resorts and boating facilities as well in the area.
