Amid rising concerns over potential flooding and urban disruptions, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has swung into action following a heavy rainfall alert issued by the India Meteorological Department. GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan, during a visit to the corporation’s control room on Wednesday, instructed teams to operate in emergency mode and respond swiftly to citizen complaints as the city braces for intense showers later this evening.
Although the city is currently experiencing moderate showers, officials anticipate intense rainfall beginning Wednesday evening. As a precaution, all employee leave has been cancelled, and senior officials have been instructed to remain at headquarters. Zonal and Deputy Commissioners are conducting field inspections, relocating residents from low-lying and flood-prone areas to safer locations and relief centres. Town Planning teams are evacuating occupants from structurally unsafe buildings.
Relief operations are being coordinated by Deputy Commissioners and local Tahsildars, with support from the Police, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), Hyderabad Traffic Police, Metro Rail authorities, Irrigation Department, and Revenue officials. Preventive measures have been implemented at key nala points to mitigate flooding risks.
Commissioner Karnan issued a public advisory urging citizens to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. He warned of potential traffic congestion and strictly instructed GHMC and Water Board staff — as well as the public — not to open manholes under any circumstances. Citizens are encouraged to report any such issues to the GHMC control room.
To ensure smoother traffic flow, special attention is being given to known choke points. Coordination between traffic police and HMWSSB has helped reduce waterlogging, thanks to underground sumps installed at strategic locations. The Commissioner announced plans to expand this infrastructure to more areas in the coming days.
