As part of a sustained effort to make Hyderabad a beggar-free city, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has relocated 221 individuals from various traffic junctions and religious hotspots. The special drive, led by GHMC's Urban Community Development (UCD) wing, focused on high-density areas such as Bashirbagh, Secretariat, Nampally, and Begumbazar.
Among those identified were 173 men, 37 women, and 11 children. Nineteen individuals were shifted to GHMC-run shelter homes, while the remaining 202 received counselling and were sent back to their native places or reunited with families. The process included medical check-ups and was conducted in coordination with local police to ensure safety and dignity during rehabilitation.
UCD teams acted on specific inputs regarding people engaged in begging, especially around religious sites and pedestrian-heavy zones. GHMC officials emphasized that this initiative is part of a larger plan to restore order to public spaces and provide vulnerable individuals with access to support systems. Special monitoring squads have been deployed for sustained action, and the campaign will continue in a phased manner.
Through this drive, GHMC reiterates its commitment to building a more inclusive, clean, and organized urban environment for all residents and visitors of Hyderabad.
