Monsoon activity to continue until July 26
Metro India News | Hyderabad
A strong revival of the Southwest monsoon between July 17 and 20 has brought much-needed relief to Telangana, which was grappling with a significant rainfall deficit since the season’s onset. From June 1 to July 15, the state recorded a 21% rainfall shortfall, with several districts including those under GHMC jurisdiction among the worst-hit. However, the widespread and intense rains over the last four days have narrowed the deficit across many regions.
In the GHMC limits, Hyderabad’s rainfall deficit decreased from 58% to 36%, Medchal-Malkajgiri improved from 55% to 34%, and Ranga Reddy showed the most remarkable recovery with its deficit reducing to just 15%.
Districts like Hanmakonda, Kamareddy, Kumaram Bheem, and Mahabubabad received well above their normal daily averages on July 20. For instance, Hanumakonda recorded 32.9 mm of rain (274% above normal), Kumaram Bheem 24.4 mm (101%), and Mahabubabad 23.3 mm (199%). Even areas with severe shortfalls like Nalgonda and Suryapet saw rainfall that contributed positively toward recovery.
As of July 20, Khammam and Kumaram Bheem reported a surplus in cumulative rainfall, while Hanumakonda, Mahabubabad, and Karimnagar have moved closer to normal. Nonetheless, J. Bhupalpally (-41%), Nirmal (-57%), Mahbubnagar, Mancherial, and Nalgonda (all > -40%) continue to face serious deficits.
IMD Hyderabad Meteorologist G.N.R.S. Srinivas Rao attributed this revival to the presence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over south Odisha and the east-west trough along 13°N latitude, both of which enhanced monsoon activity across the region.
