The Mouse Deer count at the Nehru Zoological Park has gone up to a decent 300 from just six in 2010. Thanks to the efforts at the Mouse Deer Breeding Centre inside the zoo, the number increased multi-fold. The Member Secretary of the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), Government of India who visited the zoo on Monday was all praise- The species is now in high demand for exchange with other zoos across India, he said.
The visit included inspections of animal enclosures, night shelters, and briefings on vaccination schedules, animal health protocols, breeding and exchange programmes, and enclosure enrichment efforts. Officials also visited the breeding centre in person and lauded its scientific approach, infrastructure, and long-term impact on conservation. The zoo’s overall maintenance, hygiene, space utilization, and educational programmes were appreciated.
As part of Van Mahotsav and the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign, the team planted Cassia Fistula (Golden Shower Tree) and other fruit-bearing saplings within the zoo premises. A presentation was also given on the functioning and development of zoos across Telangana. The Central Zoo Authority assured continued support for conservation activities in the state and applauded the efforts of the zoo staff in making Hyderabad Zoo a leader in wildlife preservation.
