The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has decided to implement a permanent solution to the long-pending sewage overflow issue in Kavuri Hills, near Durgam Cheruvu.
Following repeated complaints from residents about overflowing drains during rains, HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy, along with officials from related departments, inspected the affected area on Monday.
Officials explained that continuous rains have raised the water level of Durgam Cheruvu to the Full Tank Level (FTL), resulting in overflow from sewerage lines. The MD inspected the overflow points and directed officials to take up immediate de-silting of sewerage lines to prevent further problems.
He further instructed the engineering teams to prepare a detailed action plan for a permanent fix, keeping in mind the heavy inflow during monsoons. Temporary measures were also suggested to ease the situation in the short term. The MD emphasized the need to connect sewage from nearby buildings to the Durgam Cheruvu STP near I&MD and to ensure that sewage does not enter stormwater drains. He also directed officials to identify such points and design separate lines for sewage and rainwater. Ashok Reddy instructed irrigation authorities to continuously monitor the sluice valves at Durgam Cheruvu outlet to avoid unexpected overflow.
Later, he inspected the 7 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) near Durgam Cheruvu. He reviewed the treatment process, inlet and outlet points, and also visited the SCADA control room to check online monitoring systems. The MD suggested setting up a central dashboard at the headquarters to track inflow, treatment capacity, and water quality at all STPs across the city in real time. He also stressed on keeping STP surroundings clean, planting greenery, and taking up beautification works.
