The Hyderabad Division of South Central Railway has emerged as a model for sustainable waste management, setting new standards for eco-friendly railway operations. Partnering with ScrapQ Hub Pvt. Ltd. from September 2024 to 2027, the division has implemented scientific waste management systems at Kacheguda, Nizamabad, and Kurnool City stations.
Under the initiative, waste is systematically collected from station premises, tracks, and trains, followed by segregation and processing at Master Recovery Facilities. Recyclable materials such as plastics, paper, and aluminium are sold to certified recyclers. These are later converted into eco-products, including apparel and footwear for global brands like Nike and Adidas, ensuring over 80% waste diversion from landfills. During its first year, the project collected 108 tonnes of recyclables—65% plastics, 30% paper, and 5% aluminium—achieving 100% diversion from landfills and generating Rs 5.51 lakh annually through Non-Fare Revenue. The initiative also created 50 jobs for local communities.
Environmentally, it prevented the emission of 132 tonnes of CO2 and saved energy equivalent to powering 500 homes monthly. The division also conducted 18 awareness drives promoting waste segregation and reduced use of single-use plastics.
With economic, social, and environmental benefits, the Hyderabad Division stands as a benchmark for the Indian Railways in transforming stations into clean, green, and future-ready ecosystems.
