Hyderabad gets safer pole-mounted transformers

To modernize the city’s electricity distribution system, the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) has introduced a new method for transformer installation in Greater Hyderabad.

Earlier, most distribution transformers were installed at ground level along roadsides. This caused inconvenience to pedestrians and posed safety risks, as garbage and plastic waste could accumulate around the units, sometimes leading to short circuits and accidents.

To address these issues, TGSPDCL has adopted the Pole-Mounted Distribution Transformer system. In this method, an iron structure is fixed about 10 feet above ground on an electric pole, and the transformer is mounted on it. This ensures pedestrian movement is unhindered and eliminates waste accumulation around the equipment, significantly improving safety standards.

The new system also reduces installation costs, as it removes the need for large concrete foundations. A model pole-mounted transformer was recently inspected at Amberpet Police Lines, and officials recommended this approach for all new transformer installations in the city.

The inspection was attended by senior TGSPDCL officials, including the Chairman & Managing Director, Director, Chief Engineer (Metro), and Superintending Engineer, who reviewed the setup and provided suggestions for wider implementation. With this initiative, TGSPDCL aims to enhance public safety, streamline electricity distribution, and ensure a cleaner, more organized urban environment.
