The Andhra Pradesh government is investing Rs.30 crore to develop the Nuzvid market yard, aiming to enhance the region's famed mango trade, said State Housing, Information, and Public Relations Minister Kolusu Parthasarathi during a review meeting with farmers, traders, and officials at the market yard on Wednesday.
Minister Parthasarathi acknowledged Nuzvid mangoes' national and international recognition but expressed concern over recent declines in quality, impacting farmers' income. He emphasized Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu's focus on agriculture and allied sectors, highlighting subsidized schemes for farmers. He also announced the upcoming implementation of a mango crop insurance scheme, which had been previously neglected by the past government.
The minister urged farmers to prioritize quality improvement to further enhance Nuzvid mangoes' reputation. He recalled that during Nara Lokesh's Yuva Galam Padayatra, mango farmers brought their issues to his attention, prompting the promise of support. In fulfillment of that promise, the government is allocating Rs.30 crore for infrastructure development at the market yard. The onus is now on farmers, traders, and scientists to utilize these facilities and ensure high-quality mango production, thereby preserving the Nuzvid mango brand.
A committee comprising horticulture, marketing, and mango research scientists, along with farmers, will be formed to address quality concerns. This committee will conduct field visits in mango-growing areas, focusing on soil improvement and best practices for high-quality mango production. The goal is to revitalize the Nuzvid mango’s former glory. Mango research institute scientists were also urged to provide more practical guidance to farmers.
To boost farmers’ economic prospects, the government pledged to improve transportation facilities and introduce air cargo services for exporting high-quality mangoes internationally. The minister also mentioned the ongoing efforts to secure environmental clearances for the Chintalapudi lift irrigation project, with plans for its timely completion. Furthermore, the establishment of food processing units and a food park in the Nuzvid region is planned to ensure a prosperous future.
The meeting was attended by several officials, including Marketing Department Joint Director Srinivas, Deputy Director Lavanya Veni, EE Srinivas Rao, Nuzvid RDO M. Vani, Horticulture Department Additional Director Haranadha Reddy, Deputy Director Rammohan, and mango research center scientist Seeta Mahalakshmi.
