November is observed as Lung Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of prevention, early detection and advances in treatment. Lung cancer remains one of the most serious global health challenges and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), approximately 2.6 million new cases and 1.9 million deaths were estimated globally in 2024.
Persistent cough, coughing up blood (haemoptysis), breathlessness, unexplained weight loss, chest pain, recurrent respiratory infections and persistent fatigue are some of the common symptoms associated with lung cancer. Targeted therapies act on specific genetic alterations or molecular pathways responsible for cancer growth. Depending on the biomarker identified, these treatments may be administered as oral medications or injections. In appropriately selected patients, they can help control the disease and improve outcomes. Low-dose CT screening can help detect lung cancer at an earlier stage in appropriately selected high-risk individuals.
The progress made in molecular diagnostics, targeted therapies, immunotherapy and precision radiotherapy has significantly transformed lung cancer management. While treatment outcomes vary from patient to patient, these developments offer better treatment possibilities and renewed hope.
