CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) marked its 10th Founder’s Day on the birth anniversary of Dr PM Bhargava by honouring Prof D. Balasubramanian for six decades of mentorship. A faculty member from 1982–1998 and Director from 1992–1998, he was among the institute’s earliest leaders, serving as Deputy Director when CCMB became India’s first independent national biology research laboratory.
At the event, Prof Balasubramanian reflected on fostering a culture where science and the arts coexisted—an ethos he later extended to LV Prasad Eye Institute. Eminent scientists and former students shared memories of his guidance and institution-building, including contributions to research, special-needs education, and science communication. CCMB Director Dr Vinay K Nandicoori praised his lasting impact, calling him a pillar in shaping the institute’s legacy.
