The Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy challenged former CM K Chandrashekar Rao to a debate on the loss suffered by the state in utilising Krishna waters and pointed out that the BRS government, after two consecutive terms in power, left Telangana with a staggering debt burden of Rs 6,69,257 crore.
He highlighted the financial challenges faced by the state due to the substantial debt inherited from the previous BRS administration. In a marathon speech of more than 2:30 hours during the Motion of Thanks to the Governor’s address in the Assembly on Saturday, the Chief Minister underscored the state’s heavy fiscal commitments and the resulting constraints on implementing new initiatives.
Refuting the figures presented by the BRS, CM Revanth Reddy stated that in the past 15 months, the Congress government had borrowed Rs 1,58,041 crore. However, a vast majority of this amount was utilized for debt servicing. Of this, Rs 88,591 crore was allocated to principal repayments, while Rs 64,768 crore was spent on interest payments. As a result, only Rs 4,682 crore remained available for new welfare schemes and infrastructure development.
He said that unpaid pending bills amounted to Rs 40,154 crore, while dues to power utilities (Discoms and Singareni) and SC/ST sub-plan funds totalled Rs 1,09,740 crore. In total, the financial liability inherited by the Congress government from the previous regime stands at Rs 8,19,151 crore.
With a significant portion of state resources allocated towards loan repayments, the government has limited fiscal space to introduce new developmental programs. Despite these constraints, Revanth Reddy reaffirmed the Congress government’s commitment to ensuring financial discipline while striving to fulfill its promises to the people of Telangana.
Revanth dares KCR to a debate on Krishna Waters
Revanth accused former CM K Chandrashekar Rao of neglecting irrigation projects in erstwhile Mahabubnagar district because of which Telangana’s share in Krishna waters has been compromised. KCR did not raise his voice when AP was going ahead with the Rayalaseema project. Despite KCR having no connection with Mahabubnagar district, the people of the district rallied behind him and elected him as their MP in 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
KCR had an opportunity to thank the people of the district when he was the CM of the state for nearly 10 years. However, he intentionally neglected projects in Palamuru district and also gave his consent for 299 TMC Krishna water allocation to Telangana. Only after the Congress government came into power, we raised our strong objection and appealed to the Krishna Board to revisit the allocations and ensure justice to Telangana. He pointed out that projects like SLBC and Dindi, if completed, would have resolved water issues in Nalgonda. He also challenged former CM KCR to a debate on Krishna water disputes, asserting the current government’s commitment to ensuring water security for Telangana’s farmers.
The Chief Minister stated that the BRS government abandoned key irrigation projects for commissions. He blamed BRS for failing to complete critical infrastructure in the Krishna catchment area and accused KCR of prioritizing personal gains over the development of Telangana.
KCR drew Rs 57 lakh salary in last 15 months
BRS is claiming no one in Congress can match their leader’s stature. Are they bothered more about stature than state’s future? Stature is associated with a position and not an individual, Revanth said. The people of the state gave them power twice and the same people defeated them in 2023 and put them in opposition. KCR had drawn a salary of nearly Rs 57,184,00 (57 lakh) in the last 15 months for being a member of Telangana assembly and did nothing. He attended Assembly twice and was not seen in any official programmes in his Gajwel segment, said Revanth, appealing to KCR to attend the assembly and share his suggestions and valuable experience so that people of Telangana get benefited.
Will not spare abuse and personal attacks on social media in the name of journalism
Revanth in a fiery tone slammed the BRS for faulting the government for the arrest of two journalists for personal attack against him and his family on a youtube channel. Does BRS subscribe to the abusive and filthy language shown in the video and what if their family members are targeted in the same manner, Revanth said. Mincing no words, CM said his blood was boiling at the way his family and female members of the family were being targeted. Being in the response of the CM's chair, Revanth said, he was holding back.
Modi is ‘Bade Bhai’ for all States
Revanth slammed BRS for finding fault with his visits to New Delhi or his meetings with Narendra Modi or various Union Ministers.
“I have been to New Delhi 32 times in the last 15 months. I might go 300 times if needed for funds and support to Telangana state. Modi is the PM of the country and I have respect for him for that. As the CM of Telangana, it is my duty to meet the PM and seek Central government’s support and assistance. This is the way the federal system works. Modi is the “Bade Bhai” for all states in the country because Centre-States have to work in tandem for progress and development.
Politically, I might differ with Modi, but as the CM of a state, I have to maintain good relations with the PM of the country for the state’s good and its unfortunate BRS is missing this basic point and making a hue and cry out of this issue,” CM said.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy emphasized the government's commitment to running all institutions in the true spirit of the Indian Constitution. He criticized the previous BRS government for disrespecting the Governor and misinterpreting her speech. The new government, he assured, prioritizes institutional integrity and respects constitutional bodies.
Fulfilling election promises
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy emphasized his government's commitment to fulfilling election promises, focusing on farmer welfare, women's empowerment, and employment. He said his administration waived Rs. 20,624 crore in farm loans, increased Rythu Bharosa, and provided Rs. 500 LPG cylinders, free RTC travel for women, and job opportunities. He criticized the previous BRS government for neglecting irrigation, education, and employment. Revanth highlighted his dedication to transparency, governance, and Telangana’s overall development, urging collective efforts for progress
BRS staged a walk-out
Meanwhile, BRS boycotted Revanth’s reply by staging a walk-out in Assembly and in Council later. The pink party slammed CM saying that he was speaking ill against CM for his comments that KCR will be sent to mortuary by the people of the state. Clarifying on this, Revanth later said in his speech he only mentioned that BRS would be sent to the mortuary by the people as it lost political significance completely in the state. Revanth said he wished KCR to live for 100 years and also spend the remaining 30 years in opposition while Congress would rule the state.
