The long-swirling speculation over the political debut of the YS family’s third generation has finally ended. Andhra Pradesh Congress chief YS Sharmila on Monday made a sensational announcement that her son, YS Raja Reddy, will indeed enter politics. She declared that at the right time, Raja Reddy will formally step into state politics, sending ripples across Andhra Pradesh’s political circles.
The announcement came during Sharmila and Raja Reddy’s visit to Kurnool. Before embarking on the tour, the mother-son duo sought blessings from YS Vijayamma, Sharmila’s mother and wife of the late Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, at their Hyderabad residence. Later, in Kurnool, they participated in a direct interaction with farmers at the onion market, where Sharmila made the political revelation in the presence of reporters.
The buzz around Raja Reddy’s future began intensifying in August, during the 16th death anniversary of his grandfather, YSR. At the memorial program at YSR Ghat in Pulivendula, Raja Reddy’s presence alongside his mother caught widespread public attention, fueling speculation that his entry into politics was imminent. Sharmila’s statement has now put an official stamp on what was until now only conjecture.
Raja Reddy, who has completed his higher education in the United States, carries the weight of a powerful political lineage. His marriage last year to Priya Atluri, granddaughter of entrepreneur Prasad Atluri of Chutneys fame, further strengthened his social prominence.
With this move, Andhra Pradesh politics braces for a new chapter in the YSR family saga, while Raja Reddy’s entry could energize the Congress in the state, also altering the equations among regional parties that have long vied to claim YSR’s legacy.
For now, Sharmila has made it clear, the third generation of the YSR family is ready to take the political plunge, and the countdown to Raja Reddy’s debut has officially begun.
