On World Immunization Day, observed annually on Friday, Dr Srikrishna Raghavendra Boddu, Consultant General Physician at Kamineni Hospitals, emphasized that vaccination is a lifelong commitment that protects individuals, families, and communities from preventable diseases.
Under India’s Universal Immunization Programme (UIP), around 2.67 crore newborns and 2.9 crore pregnant women are immunized annually. While the national DTP3 coverage is approximately 94%, Telangana records around 67% coverage among children, highlighting progress alongside the need for expanded outreach, particularly in remote and migrant populations.
Global research shows vaccines’ transformative impact: since 1974, they have saved 154 million lives, with the measles vaccine alone preventing nearly 60% of child deaths. Vaccines also reduce pediatric hospital admissions and improve maternal mental health.
Dr Boddu stressed immunization from cradle to cane, with specific vaccines for children, teenagers, adults, and seniors. He urged the public to check records, update vaccinations, and consult medical professionals.
