184 tribal runners set for Hyderabad marathon

From the rugged trails and remote villages of Bastar to the streets of Hyderabad, 184 young tribal runners from Chhattisgarh are set to participate in the 15th edition of the NMDC Hyderabad Marathon 2026 on August 29 and 30. For many, it will be their first opportunity to compete in a major city marathon, offering exposure to organised athletics and potential career opportunities.

NMDC, the title sponsor of the marathon, organised the NMDC Freedom Run 2026 at its operational locations in Karnataka and Chhattisgarh in association with the Hyderabad Runners Society. More than 2,000 participants took part in the 5K events at Donimalai, Bacheli and Kirandul.

As an extension of the initiative, 184 runners from remote villages across Chhattisgarh were selected for the Hyderabad Marathon. They come from regions including Bailadila, Sukma, Dantewada, Bijapur, Bastar and Jagdalpur.

NMDC has provided the contingent with running shoes, kits, training, accommodation and transportation. Training began on August 17. The group includes six women, with most competing in the 10-km category, while a few experienced runners will participate in the half and full marathons.

With around 32,000 participants expected, the event will provide these young runners a major platform to compete, gain exposure and showcase their potential, highlighting sport's ability to create opportunities and uncover talent from remote communities.
