Gen Z and Millennials are redefining career success, with only 6% aspiring to senior leadership roles, according to Deloitte’s 2026 Global Gen Z and Millennial Survey of 22,500 respondents across 44 countries. Instead, they prioritize mental health, work-life balance, flexibility, and meaningful work, while rising living costs remain their biggest concern.
Despite changing priorities, economic realities continue to influence career decisions. Cost of living remained the biggest concern for both generations for the fifth consecutive year, cited by 38% of Gen Z respondents and 42% of Millennials.
Sharing observations from the industry, Cuttari Vinod Kumar, President of the Forum for IT Employees (FITE), Telangana, said complaints regarding layoffs in senior positions continue to reach the association.
He noted that employees in any industry naturally expect growth through periodic appraisals and salary hikes. According to him, job-hopping has declined compared to previous years and the market is gradually stabilizing.
However, he described the situation for fresh entrants into the IT sector as worrying. Earlier, companies often recruited and trained more employees than required. Today, he said, lakhs of offer letters remain pending, placements have reduced, and recruitment activity has slowed considerably.
“They're more towards AI, Digital marketing, innovation, editors. Number of opportunities at opening levels is less now”, Vinod added. He pointed out that routine coding jobs are shrinking, while the opportunities at the entry level have become fewer.
He also expressed concern that many young professionals prefer comfortable work environments but may overlook continuous skill development. According to him, sudden layoffs and forceful resignations often affect employees who fail to upgrade their skills in line with industry requirements.
Growth, Flexibility and Entrepreneurship
Priyanka K, a 24-year-old former Deloitte employee who now works as a freelance makeup artist, said remaining in a single job is often insufficient to keep pace with inflation and financial goals. She believes switching jobs has become one of the most practical ways to secure better salaries and opportunities.
Cognizant employee Vashishta emphasized that younger professionals increasingly value learning, flexibility and meaningful opportunities over blind loyalty to organizations.
However, not everyone agrees with the trend, a current Deloitte employee Aditi Malhotra said she still aspires to continuously upgrade her skills and secure higher positions within her industry.
Experts believe Gen Z workers are not rejecting leadership itself. Rather, they are questioning whether traditional managerial roles, often associated with stress, burnout, long hours and constant availability, are worth pursuing.
