A nearly 700-year-old Shiva temple built in the distinctive Kakatiya architectural style on the outskirts of Sanigaram village in Nallabelli mandal, Warangal district, is in a critically dilapidated condition and is on the verge of collapse, according to heritage experts.

Dr. E. Sivanagireddy, CEO of Pleach India Foundation, visited the site after receiving information from Warangal-based historian Dr. Racharla Ganapati. During his field inspection, he noted that the temple, which reflects classic Kakatiya-era craftsmanship—particularly from the reign of Ganapatideva—remains an important yet neglected heritage structure.

The temple comprises a garbhagriha (sanctum), ardha mandapa, and a 16-pillared mahamandapa constructed on an elevated base. It also features ornate doorframes and finely carved mouldings that represent the signature architectural excellence of the Kakatiyas. However, the structure is now in an alarming state, with collapsed doorways, fallen roof slabs, displaced pillars, and a damaged balustraded staircase. Dense vegetation has further engulfed the monument, concealing much of its original form.

Speaking to Metro India, Dr. Sivanagireddy expressed deep concern, stating, “This temple is a silent witness to the glorious Kakatiya legacy, but today it is literally on the verge of disappearance. Immediate intervention is essential to save what remains of this heritage structure before it is lost forever.”

He also sensitised local farmers on the historical importance of the site and appealed to villagers to support urgent preservation efforts through dismantling and scientific reconstruction on a modern foundation to ensure its survival for future generations. As a preliminary step, Mr. Aravind Arya, Secretary of TORCH, a heritage initiative, has come forward to undertake digital documentation of the temple as part of the restoration process.
