Marking a major leap toward sustainable infrastructure, Andhra Pradesh has become the first state in the country to experiment with Danish Fiber-Reinforced Asphalt Technology for road construction.
The pilot project was officially launched on Friday by the Minister for Roads, Buildings, Infrastructure, and Investments B.C. Janardhan Reddy at Mudigedu–Sanjamala road stretch in Banaganapalle constituency. The initiative aims to lay high-durability, low-maintenance, and climate-resistant roads using cutting-edge European technology, with support from Danish experts. The Minister inspected the newly set-up Danish Asphalt Fiber manufacturing plant near Ravvalakonda and formally initiated the road construction using the imported fiber mix.
Speaking at the launch event, Minister Janardhan Reddy stated, “Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who constantly explores global innovations, we are integrating advanced road technologies to enhance public infrastructure. This Danish Fiber-Reinforced Asphalt has already proven successful in high-profile projects like Heathrow Airport (UK), Dubai Metro, and A7 Motorway in Germany.”
The technology increases the lifespan of roads from the current average of 3–4 years to 8–10 years, especially important in an era where 80-tonne transport trucks are commonplace. While the cost per kilometer increases from Rs.24 lakh to Rs.28 lakh, the minister emphasized the long-term savings in repairs and sustainability.
During the inspection, R&B officials and Danish representatives briefed the minister on the technical composition and performance metrics of the fiber mix. Minister Janardhan Reddy personally examined the asphalt quality and reiterated the government’s commitment to technical scrutiny, durability, and public benefit.
“We will monitor the results of this pilot closely. Based on performance, we will decide whether to scale this up statewide or explore even more cost-efficient technologies,” the minister added. He assured that quality standards will be strictly enforced, and road projects across the state will be expedited using the most durable materials available.
