BJP threatens SC move over CBI probe GO on Kaleshwaram Project

The Telangana unit of the BJP has demanded that the Congress-led state government revise the Government Order (GO) issued for a CBI probe into the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project. Objecting to what it called the "narrow scope" of the inquiry, the BJP warned it would approach the Supreme Court if the GO is not amended within 15 days.

Addressing a press conference, Adilabad BJP MLA Payal Shankar insisted that the CBI investigation must encompass the entire Kaleshwaram project and all associated corruption. He criticized the current GO for limiting the probe to irregularities at the Medigadda, Annaram, and Sundilla barrages—projects valued at around Rs 12,000 crore.

"The Congress once alleged that the Kaleshwaram scam exceeded Rs 1 lakh crore. Now, by restricting the CBI probe to just Rs 12,000 crore, it appears to be shielding the BRS and select contractors," Shankar alleged. He further claimed that this selective inquiry raises suspicions of a tacit understanding between the Congress and BRS.

The BJP MLA also accused the previous BRS government of destroying Telangana’s economy through the Kaleshwaram project, claiming that contracts worth thousands of crores were awarded without tenders. He cited reports by the Justice P.C. Ghose Commission and the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA), which had flagged significant irregularities and unverified repairs.

“If the Congress is truly serious about exposing corruption, why restrict the CBI’s scope? Why not allow it to investigate all aspects of the project, including barrages, substations, and pump houses?” Shankar asked.
