Caste Census is Telangana’s Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, while addressing the meeting with the Independent Expert Working Group at MCHRD, described the Telangana caste census not merely as data collection but as a “Mega Health Check-Up” for the state, providing a clear diagnosis of the socio-economic conditions of its people.
The independent Expert Committee constituted by the Telangana Government to study and analyse the findings of the caste census has submitted its comprehensive and 300 pages report on Saturday.
The expert committee emphasized that the Telangana caste survey is the first of its kind in the country, aimed at achieving social justice and empowerment across all communities. Conducted in two phases, the first round was held from November 6 to December 25, 2024, involving over 1,03,889 enumerators and supervisors, covering 96.9% of households. The second phase, held from February 16 to 28, 2025, allowed missed families to register through Mee Seva centers, GHMC, MPDO offices, and online portals.
The committee is chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge Justice B Sudarshan Reddy, included eminent scholars such as Professor Kanche Ilaiah (Vice Chairman), Professor Shantha Sinha, Professor Himanshu, Dr. Sukhdev Thorat, Nikhil Dey, Professor Bhangya Bhukya, Professor Purushottam Reddy, Professor Jean Drèze, Professor Thomas Piketty, Praveen Chakravarthy, and IAS Anudeep Durisetty as Secretary.
The Chief Minister stated that the survey was conducted successfully in line with the assurance given by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, reiterating the government’s commitment to social justice and the upliftment of backward communities.
As per the survey results, Telangana has 1,15,71,457 households, with 1,12,36,849 families (97.10%) and 3,55,50,759 individuals participating. The caste-wise breakdown includes SCs – 17.42% (61,91,294), STs – 10.43% (37,08,408), BCs – 56.36% (2,00,37,668), and others – 15.89% (56,13,389).
Revanth Reddy emphasized that the report submitted by the expert committee would serve as a powerful tool to formulate inclusive policies and implement targeted welfare measures. He asserted that the government is determined to ensure that every eligible beneficiary receives the benefits of welfare schemes.
Highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of the social fabric, the Chief Minister requested the expert committee to examine the disparities between urban and rural areas, and to analyse the underlying causes of such gaps. He also urged the committee to identify the actual needs of the people and provide evidence-based recommendations that would guide the government in addressing those needs effectively.
“The findings of this survey will play a pivotal role in shaping Telangana’s development agenda. We are committed to using this data to bring about real change for the weaker sections,” the Chief Minister said.
The CM reiterated that the government will review the committee’s report thoroughly and take concrete decisions in the cabinet to ensure justice, empowerment, and equitable access to opportunities and welfare schemes for all sections of society.
