In a landmark achievement, doctors at Durgabai Deshmukh Renova Cancer Centre, Vidyanagar, have successfully performed their first-ever bone marrow stem cell transplantation, bringing new hope to patients battling advanced cancers. This marks a historic milestone in the hospital’s four-decade journey of healthcare service.
The breakthrough case involved a 58-year-old man from Secunderabad, diagnosed with High Grade Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, a form of blood cancer. He had been suffering from swollen lymph nodes, fever, night sweats, weight loss, fatigue, and skin rash for nearly six months. Despite undergoing six cycles of chemotherapy at a reputed hospital, his condition worsened, and the cancer relapsed.
As a last resort, the patient approached DDH Renova Cancer Centre. After a detailed review, a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. U. Azad Chandrashekhar, Medical Director & Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist, and Dr. Vishal Toka, Senior Consultant Medical & Hemato Oncologist, accepted the challenge. The patient underwent three cycles of high-dose chemotherapy, followed by an autologous bone marrow stem cell transplant—a process where the patient’s own stem cells were collected, stored, and reintroduced after chemotherapy to restore blood cell production.
The patient responded positively and, after comprehensive post-transplant care, was discharged in good health within a month.
Speaking about the success, Dr. Chandrashekhar and Dr. Toka highlighted that bone marrow stem cell transplantation is a life-saving option for relapsed lymphoma and multiple myeloma patients.
However, it requires a healthy bone marrow and may not be suitable for all. They emphasized that DDH Renova provides cutting-edge cancer treatments at the lowest possible cost without compromising on quality, making advanced care accessible to patients irrespective of age or financial background.
The patient’s family expressed heartfelt gratitude, calling the recovery a “new lease of life.” Hospital officials hailed the achievement as a milestone in affordable cancer care, reaffirming DDH Renova’s commitment to treating rare and complex conditions with world-class standards.
