Dr. Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India, shared a unique and profound connection with the Telugu-speaking people.

His political journey owes much to the vision of a towering Telugu leader, the late P.V. Narasimha Rao, who in 1991 inducted the apolitical economist into his Cabinet as Finance Minister and nominated him to the Rajya Sabha. This decision marked the beginning of Dr. Singh’s remarkable political career.

Initiatives rooted in Telugu land

Dr. Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister further deepened his bond with the Telugu people. The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), a flagship program aimed at alleviating rural poverty, was launched on February 2, 2006, in Bandlapalli village, Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh. This initiative remains a cornerstone of rural development in India.

Additionally, Dr. Singh laid the foundation for the Outer Ring Road (ORR) project near Hyderabad in 2006. This 158-kilometer, eight-lane expressway has significantly boosted Hyderabad’s connectivity and urban development.

Championing Hyderabad Metro Rail

Dr. Singh's leadership also paved the way for the Hyderabad Metro Rail project. Approved by his Cabinet in 2007 under the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme, the project has since evolved into one of India’s most extensive metro networks, enhancing urban mobility and driving economic growth in the region.

The last PM of united Andhra Pradesh

Dr. Singh holds the distinction of being the last Prime Minister of the undivided Andhra Pradesh. During UPA-2, his government oversaw the passage of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Bill, leading to the formation of Telangana in 2014.

Despite political challenges, Dr. Singh assured special category status for the residuary state of Andhra Pradesh—a promise unfulfilled by subsequent NDA government, as he has frequently reminded the Parliament in later years.
