Dinesh of Afzalgunj was felicitated on Republic Day by Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar for his exceptional courage and selfless action during a fire at Bacha’s Furniture showroom in Nampally. Sajjanar described him as a rare example of humanity and bravery amid chaos, where many bystanders chose to record the incident rather than help.
The fire broke out on Saturday afternoon at the four‑storey furniture store, rapidly spreading flames and thick smoke. Rescue operations, involving fire services, police, and disaster response teams, continued for over 20 hours to evacuate people trapped inside.
Tragically, five people lost their lives, including two children aged seven and 11, an elderly woman, and two adult workers. All were found in the basement, where smoke and blocked exits prevented escape. Authorities believe the victims died from asphyxiation.
Preliminary investigations revealed serious fire safety violations. The basement, meant only for storage, was illegally used to store combustible materials and even for accommodation. The shop owner has been arrested and a criminal case registered.
Amid the crisis, Dinesh entered the hazardous site without concern for his own safety, assisting in evacuations. His courageous actions stood out as a rare display of compassion and humanity.
