Justice VK Rao appointed Patna HC Chief Justice

Senior Supreme Court advocate Sanjoy Ghosh, posted in social media platform X that Delhi High Court “lost its most polite and humble judge to Patna.” Congratulating Justice V Kameshwar Rao on his appointment as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, Sanjoy Ghosh complimented him as “the nice guy who never let the weight of office get to him.”

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended Justice V. Kameswara Rao, currently a judge of the Delhi High Court, for appointment as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. The recommendation was made at the Collegium’s meeting held on August 6, 2026.Justice Rao’s proposed appointment comes as part of the Collegium’s recommendations for the appointment of Chief Justices to several High Courts across the country. He is currently serving on the Delhi High Court bench. The Patna High Court is presently headed by Justice Sudhir Singh as Acting Chief Justice.

Born on August 7, 1965, Justice V. Kameswara Rao completed his B.A. (Hons.) in Geography and LL.B. from the University of Delhi. He enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in March 1991 and practiced before the Supreme Court, Delhi High Court and the Central Administrative Tribunal. He also appeared before other High Courts during his legal career. Practiced in the Supreme Court of India, Delhi High Court, Central Administrative Tribunal (Principal Bench), New Delhi. Also appeared in other High Courts like at Madras High Court, Port Blair (Circuit Bench of Calcutta High Court). Conducted cases relating to Service Law, Labour Law, Arbitration, Constitution and Administrative Law.

Represented various Public Sector Undertakings, Banks & Autonomous Bodies. Was Member Executive of the Central Administrative Tribunal Bar Association (Principal Bench), New Delhi. Designated as Senior Advocate by the Delhi High Court in January, 2010. Justice Rao was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court in April 2013 and became a permanent judge in March 2015. He was transferred as a Judge of Karnataka High Court and assumed office on 01.06.2024. He assumed charge as the Acting Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court

He was subsequently transferred to the Karnataka High Court in June 2024 and served there until his repatriation to the Delhi High Court in July 2025. During his tenure in Karnataka, he also served as Acting Chief Justice of that High Court. The recommendation of the Collegium is the next step in the process of appointing him as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. The final appointment will follow the prescribed constitutional procedure.
