Hyderabad: Medicover Hospitals, HITEC City, has achieved a significant surgical milestone with the successful performance of a complex Hybrid Laparoscopic-Robotic Whipple’s Resection for a rare case of duodenal adenocarcinoma. The procedure was led by Dr. Mannem Manoj Kumar, Consultant Surgical Gastroenterologist and Robotic GI Surgeon, along with a multidisciplinary surgical team.

The patient,  Shaik Rabbani Pasha (57 years), presented with persistent vomiting. Detailed endoscopic evaluation revealed a tumor in the second part of the duodenum, and biopsy confirmed adenocarcinoma with signet ring cell features, a high-risk and aggressive subtype.

After thorough evaluation, the team opted for a Whipple’s procedure. The surgery was performed using an innovative hybrid approach, combining laparoscopic tumor resection with robot-assisted reconstruction using the DaVinci X robotic system. The patient had an uneventful postoperative recovery, experienced minimal pain, and was discharged in stable condition without any complications.

Speaking on the achievement, Dr. Mannem Manoj Kumar said, “This successful outcome highlights the growing role of hybrid laparoscopic-robotic techniques in managing complex gastrointestinal cancers. Such advanced approaches offer improved surgical precision, reduced morbidity, faster recovery, and better overall outcomes for patients.”

The case was supported by a multidisciplinary team including Dr. Ganshyam M. Jagathkar, Director & Senior Consultant – Critical Care, Dr. Jogu Kiran Kumar, Consultant – Medical Gastroenterology, and Dr. Venu Gopal, Consultant Anesthesiologist, ensuring comprehensive perioperative care.
