Mohan Bhagwat meets PM Modi

30-04-2025 12:00:00 AM

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat on Tuesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the latter’s official residence in New Delhi. The timing suggests a possible connection to urgent national issues, potentially related to security or geopolitical developments, as speculated in some X posts referencing concerns about India-Pakistan relations. However, no official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the RSS, or the BJP has confirmed the agenda.

This meeting follows their public appearance together on March 30, 2025, in Nagpur, where Modi made a historic visit to the RSS headquarters, the first by a sitting Prime Minister.

That event, coinciding with the RSS’s centenary celebrations and the Gudi Padwa festival, was seen as an effort to reaffirm synergy between the RSS and BJP after reported tensions in 2024. The April 29 meeting, however, appears to have been prompted by more immediate concerns, given its occurrence shortly after a high-level security briefing.

The meeting’s significance is amplified by the following factors:  Security Context: The high-level security meeting prior to Bhagwat’s arrival indicates that the discussion may have touched on critical national security matters.

Political Dynamics: The RSS has a significant influence on BJP’s organizational decisions, including the selection of the party’s national president. With the BJP yet to finalize a successor to J.P. Nadda, whose term has been extended since January 2024, the meeting could have addressed internal party matters.

RSS-BJP Relations: The March 30 Nagpur visit was interpreted as a truce after reported friction in 2024, particularly following the BJP’s failure to secure a majority in the Lok Sabha elections (240 seats). Bhagwat’s statements in 2024 about avoiding “arrogance” were seen as a critique of Modi’s leadership style, making this meeting a potential continuation of efforts to align the RSS and BJP’s visions.
