Not just protection, but power-The journey of women’s empowerment

Women are leading from the front.  Female literacy has crossed 70%, and participation in higher education and research is steadily rising yet, the question remains are we truly safe? Official data shows that India recorded over 4.45 lakh cases of crimes against women, and the crime rate has been steadily rising in recent years.  But statistics only tell half the story. The more disturbing truth lies in what is not reported. A recent national survey revealed that 4 in 10 women in urban India feel unsafe, with harassment in public spaces and transport being a daily concern.

No woman can be empowered if she is not safe. A girl may be educated and earning, but if she fears stepping out, her independence is compromised. Safety is not a separate issue, it is the foundation upon which empowerment stands. Respect for women must be taught at home, not enforced by law later. Justice delayed is justice denied and often forgotten.

Women’s safety is not a “women’s issue.” It is a societal responsibility. When a woman feels unsafe, it is not her failure, it is the failure of the system around her. The journey from safety to empowerment is still incomplete. But it is not impossible. The day a woman can step out without fear, speak without hesitation and live without limits. That is the day empowerment will no longer be a slogan, but a lived reality. Until then, as women and as citizens, we must not just hope for change. We must demand it, shape it and stand for it.
