In an administrative move aimed at accelerating urban development, the Andhra Pradesh government has upgraded Pithapuram Municipality, represented by Deputy Chief Minister and Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan, from Second Grade to Selection Grade status. The decision is expected to enhance infrastructure development and improve civic amenities in the historic temple town.
Official orders confirming the upgrade were issued after a detailed review of proposals submitted by the Pithapuram Municipal Council and its special officer. The government examined financial records, including income and expenditure statements from 2021 to 2025, and concluded that the municipality met the eligibility criteria for Selection Grade status. Typically, municipalities with an annual income exceeding Rs 8 crore qualify for this category.
With the upgraded status, Pithapuram is set to receive increased administrative and financial support. A Group-I rank officer will now be appointed as Municipal Commissioner, strengthening governance and execution of development projects. The municipality is also expected to receive higher allocations from both state and central government schemes, along with an increase in staffing to meet growing civic demands.
Founded as a municipality in 1957, Pithapuram holds significant religious importance, attracting devotees from across the country. Prominent temples such as the Kukkuteswara Swamy Temple, Puruhutika Devi Shakti Peetham, Padagaya Kshetram, and Sripada Vallabha temple contribute to steady inflow of pilgrims, boosting local revenue and economic activity.
In recent years, the government has taken multiple initiatives to develop Pithapuram. The establishment of the Pithapuram Area Development Authority (PADA) and the sanction of Rs 37.25 crore under the Centre’s Amrit Bharat scheme for railway station modernisation reflect this focus.
