Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the semiconductor ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging) plant of US-based Micron Technology at Sanand in Gujarat, describing it as a landmark moment in India’s manufacturing journey.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said India, which has long been recognised globally for its software capabilities, is now firmly establishing its presence in the hardware sector as well. He noted that the inauguration of the first such ATMP facility in the country reflects the strengthening technological partnership between India and the United States.
Modi said the world has clearly understood that India is capable, competitive and committed to becoming a key player in advanced manufacturing. Emphasising the strategic importance of semiconductors, he remarked that if oil influenced the geopolitics of the previous century, microchips will shape the economic and technological landscape of the present one. India, he added, is rapidly emerging as an integral part of the global semiconductor value chain.
According to a government release, the Sanand plant will manufacture Solid State Drive (SSD) storage devices as well as memory products such as DRAM and NAND chips. Micron Technology has invested Rs 22,516 crore in the facility.
The project is expected to generate significant employment opportunities, strengthen domestic chip production capacity and accelerate India’s efforts to become a global electronics manufacturing hub.
