A rainwater harvesting initiative at an apartment complex in Madhapur has emerged as a successful model for sustainable water management, significantly reducing dependence on water tankers and improving groundwater recharge.

Beverly Springs Apartment in the Beverly Hills area of Madhapur faced severe water shortages during the last summer season, forcing residents to spend nearly Rs 1 lakh on water tankers to meet daily requirements. The recurring crisis highlighted the urgent need for a long-term and sustainable solution.

To address the issue, the apartment management, with technical support from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), implemented a rainwater harvesting system. The project included the construction of a rainwater harvesting pit along with an injection borewell. Rooftop rainwater from the residential buildings was systematically channelled into a centralized harvesting system designed to recharge groundwater.

Officials said the initiative has already begun showing positive results, with improvements in groundwater levels and increased borewell recharge capacity. Residents are hopeful that water shortages will be significantly reduced in the upcoming summer season.

The system is also expected to bring down maintenance costs by reducing dependency on private water tankers. Apart from ensuring reliable water supply, the project supports environmental conservation and promotes sustainable water use practices.
