Shankaracharya bashes Rahul for Manusmriti remark

Swami Avmukteshwarananda Saraswati addressed the frequent debates around the Manusmriti, often fueled by political agendas. Public figures, including Rahul Gandhi, have mentioned it, yet the text remains widely criticized, particularly for allegedly endorsing caste hierarchies.

The first question should be: have critics actually studied it? More often than not, the answer is no. Opinions are shaped by hearsay or societal narratives rather than careful study. Repeated reading and reflection reveal the Manusmriti’s profound insights on morality, dharma, and social responsibility—guiding humanity toward higher consciousness beyond mere instincts.

Using Rahul Gandhi wearing the sacred thread (Janeu) as an example, the discussion extends to religious integrity. The Janeu signifies initiation, duty, and adherence to spiritual and social obligations outlined in Hindu scriptures, including the Manusmriti. Wearing it while denouncing its principles creates a contradiction: true spiritual and social benefits arise from living the values, not just displaying symbols.

This highlights a broader truth: cultural and religious symbols carry inherent responsibilities. Genuine practice demands understanding, discipline, and consistency. Claiming identity without embracing its duties diminishes the tradition’s meaning and risks hypocrisy. Authenticity is measured by respect for the system, not mere outward appearances.
