The Monsoon session of the Telangana Assembly, commencing on Saturday, is poised to be a battleground for political showdowns between the ruling Congress party and the main opposition parties Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on critical issues like the Kaleshwaram project and Backward Classes (BC) reservations.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is expected to spearhead the Congress offensive by presenting the PC Ghose Commission report, which scrutinizes the Kaleshwaram project. The report highlights significant flaws in the planning, execution, and upkeep of the Medigadda, Annaram, and Sundilla barrages, debunking BRS claims of the project being an "engineering marvel." Revanth aims to hold former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao accountable for the project’s financial and structural failures, a move designed to politically corner the BRS Supremo. KCR, who has challenged the report in the High Court, faces pressure to attend the Assembly and defend his legacy, with Congress likely to capitalize on his potential absence as evidence of dodging accountability.
The BRS, anticipating a rejection of its request to present a PowerPoint defense of the project in the Assembly, is gearing up to counter Congress by spotlighting the government’s shortcomings, including urea shortages, delays in Rythu Bandhu payments, and insufficient aid for farmers hit by recent heavy rains. BRS Supremo K Chandrashekar Rao was closeted with KTR and T Harish for two days in a row discussing the party strategies for the session and how to counter the Congress on Kaleshwaram allegations.
Simultaneously, the Congress is set to escalate its attack on the BJP by pushing for a debate on the 42% BC reservation in local body elections. Two bills passed by the Telangana Assembly to enhance BC reservations in education, employment, and political representation await Union government approval. The Centre’s inaction has put the BJP in a tight spot, with state leaders bracing for criticism. The Congress is exploring alternative measures to ensure BC justice, expecting little cooperation from the Centre.
The BJP, aiming to establish itself as a viable alternative to BRS, faces challenges in navigating the Kaleshwaram controversy while defending the Centre’s delay on the reservation issue. These sessions promise to shape Telangana’s political narrative, with intense debates and strategic maneuvers on the horizon.
