Special children discovering new hope through ‘Bhavita’

Metro India News | NALGONDA : Children with special needs who were once confined to their homes, unable to interact with society or express themselves, are now attending classes with confidence, learning new skills and becoming more independent, thanks to the 'Bhavita' Centre run under the Telangana government's Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan. The centre at Chityal in Nalgonda district is helping transform the lives of children through education, therapy and rehabilitation services.

A total of 103 children with special needs have been identified in Chityal mandal, of whom 85 attend the Bhavita Centre regularly. Among them, 22 are from Chityal municipality and 81 are from rural areas. The centre provides individualised training after assessing each child's abilities and requirements.

Children aged three to six years receive physiotherapy, speech therapy and behaviour therapy. Those with mobility challenges are trained to improve movement, while children with speech difficulties are provided specialised speech therapy. Students aged between six and 18 years are taught through games, songs, pictures and activity-based learning to make education engaging and improve communication, social interaction and life skills.

The government also extends financial and nutritional support to students and their families. Mid-day meals are provided through nearby government schools. Every student receives a monthly transport allowance of Rs.350, while parents or caregivers bringing children to the centre receive another Rs.350. Girls with special needs are provided a monthly stipend of Rs.200. In addition, the government offers a scholarship of Rs.6,000 and educational assistance ranging from Rs.9,000 to Rs.14,000 for students pursuing higher studies up to Intermediate.

Teachers, therapists and parents work together to build the confidence of every child and prepare them for an independent and dignified life. Parents who were once worried about their children's future now take pride in their progress and achievements.

Students trained at the Bhavita Centre are not only developing essential life skills but are also performing well academically. With guidance from special educators and support from their families, several students have cleared Class 10 and Intermediate public examinations, while some have gone on to pursue higher education, self-employment and jobs. The centre continues to demonstrate that with proper guidance, training and encouragement, children with special needs can realise their potential and build brighter futures.
