The undivided Warangal district is poised for a major sports infrastructure upgrade, with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy responding positively to a delegation of MLAs who sought the sanction of a Telangana State Sports School and a dedicated cricket stadium in Hanumakonda district.

The MLAs, led by Station Ghanpur MLA and former Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari, met the CM at his residence on Sunday and discussed the need for new sports facilities, citing Warangal’s growing urban population and its legacy of producing top-tier athletes, including recipients of Arjuna and Dronacharya awards.

Presently, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Hanumakonda is the only active facility in the district. While it caters to district and state-level competitions and regular training for sports hostel students and local players, the stadium is inadequate for the current needs of Warangal, which has expanded rapidly after its upgrade to Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation.

The proposed Telangana Sports School is planned at Unikicherla village in Dharmasagar mandal, on 20 acres of KUDA land abutting National Highway 163. The school aims to combine academic learning with high-performance sports training, preparing students for state, national, and international competitions.

The proposed cricket stadium, also in Unikicherla on a separate 30-acre government land parcel, is being sought in response to strong demand from the local youth and student community. The MLAs pointed out that there is currently no dedicated cricket stadium in Telangana outside Hyderabad, despite the sport’s popularity.

CM Revanth Reddy assured immediate action. He contacted the concerned department secretary during the meeting and instructed them to examine both proposals and initiate necessary planning. He reiterated the government's commitment to developing Warangal as Telangana’s second capital and said the sports infrastructure would add to the city’s rapid growth.
