The Energy Canvas

The festive season is here, bringing plans for deep cleaning, refreshing and rearranging our homes after the monsoon. Many of us will paint interiors, update wardrobes and prepare for upcoming festivals, weddings and other events. Amid these preparations, it may be worth viewing our personal spaces—whether a room, apartment or standalone house—as energy beings. Just as our bodies have energy channels and organs, our homes too possess an energy field. The health and balance of this field can directly influence how we feel, think and experience the space in which we live.

A student initiated into energy healing nearly two decades ago, who regularly practises meditation, recently approached me with a question. Since moving into a new, larger apartment two years ago, he and his family had struggled to feel settled or happy despite good light and ventilation. After examining their lifestyle patterns, we found that their son’s room, left unused after he moved away, had gradually become a storage space. Energetically, it had turned into a stagnant zone, blocking the flow of fresh energy through the house. Just as poor blood or energy circulation in one part of the body can affect an organ, one blocked corner can influence the entire home.

The festive season is actually a lovely opportunity to clear and refresh the energy flow of our homes. This proper deep cleaning makes the energy of the house sparkle, creating a happier, healthier environment for us to flourish in. Small daily resets matter too. Clearing surfaces, putting things back in their place, removing what is out of place, these small acts prevent energy from pooling and stagnation from settling in. Think of it as the energetic equivalent of keeping the nadiis clear.

Seasonal renewal brings fresh energy into our homes. Washing walls and corners clears old, trapped energy, while airing rooms invites fresh life force. Reorganising spaces can shift stagnant patterns and create new possibilities. Most importantly, letting go of what no longer serves is essential. Before buying festive clothes or home items, review existing wardrobes and storage. Overstuffed cupboards often hold unused belongings and stagnant energy. Giving away what we no longer need, with gratitude, creates space for fresh energy and turns letting go into a blessing for others.

I did this recently, spending a morning sorting through my wardrobe and setting aside clothes I had not worn in years for donation. What remained was organised, aired and ready for a few carefully chosen additions. The cupboard felt lighter—and, oddly, so did I.

Our homes are the canvas on which we live. The health of our environment influences our relationships, emotions and state of mind. A cleaner, happier space can support greater emotional clarity and help us release repetitive negative thoughts.

This festive season, before you shop, clear first. Make space and let the energy breathe. The new finds its place more easily in a home ready to receive it. Release the stale and make room for the fresh. Small rituals. Profound healing.
