A two year old baby Vagdevi from Bhongir, who had been suffering from seizures almost every day since the age of six months, has become seizure-free following advanced epilepsy surgery at Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad. As part of the pre-surgical evaluation, brain MRI and PET-CT scans revealed a small lesion (an area of abnormal tissue) in the left temporal region which was identified as the likely cause of the seizures. The child recovered well after surgery and, with no further seizures, was discharged from the hospital within a week.
A specialised paediatric neuro team comprising a pediatric neurologist, neurosurgeon and neuroanaesthesiologist jointly managed the case. Dr. N. Varsha Monica Reddy, Senior Paediatric Neurologist, Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad mentioned if seizures are not controlled with medications, parents should not delay in consulting epilepsy specialists. Dr. R. Ayyadurai, Senior Neurosurgeon, Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad , said that during the surgery, brain activity was continuously monitored using intra-operative electrocorticography (ECoG) and intra-operative neuromonitoring (IONM). The post-operative EEG showed that the abnormal electrical brain activity observed earlier was no longer present, which was a positive outcome, he mentioned.
