Andhra Pradesh has emerged as the top-performing state in the country in the implementation of digital health records and the e-Hospital system, with National Informatics Centre (NIC) officials stating that a majority of India’s digital medical records are now being generated from the state.

According to NIC officials, nearly 70% of all e-prescriptions issued across the country and 72% of digital laboratory test records are currently being generated from Andhra Pradesh. The achievement was highlighted during a two-day workshop on the “NextGen e-Hospital” platform jointly organised by the Andhra Pradesh Health Department and the National Informatics Centre at Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences in Vijayawada.

NIC Deputy Director General C.J. Antony and Division Head Ravindra Kumar said that out of 4,003 government hospitals connected to the national e-Hospital platform, 281 hospitals are located in Andhra Pradesh, reflecting the state’s aggressive push towards healthcare digitisation.

Officials explained that the system enables patients with an Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) number to access treatment seamlessly at hospitals across the country. Andhra Pradesh is reportedly ahead of other states in digitising outpatient (OPD), inpatient (IPD), laboratory and radiology records.

State Health Secretary Saurabh Gaur said the digital ecosystem has significantly improved accountability among medical staff and enhanced patient service delivery. He revealed that a speech-to-text pilot programme is currently being implemented at government hospitals in Guntur and Vijayawada to reduce doctors’ workload and speed up documentation processes.

Additionally, at Narsipatnam, automated laboratory systems are directly sending diagnostic reports to patients’ mobile phones, reducing delays and manual intervention. Officials said the state government is planning to further expand digital healthcare infrastructure as part of broader reforms aimed at improving efficiency, transparency and accessibility in public health services across Andhra Pradesh.
