“Arrangements should be made to collect waste and deliver to plants in the range of 40-50 km.” Chandrababu Naidu AP, CM

  1. 750 kg of biogas is being produced from 22 tonnes of organic waste
  2. The gas is being sold to hotels at Rs 76 per kg

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said on Saturday that a functional circular economy centre can be set up in the state using the kind of waste management plants being used in Tirupati. He was on a visit to Tirupati as part of the Swarnandhra-Swachh Andhra programme and inspected the dry waste management project, integrated solid waste management and bio-methanation gas plants, building maintenance waste and other units spread over an area of about 300 acres in ”Tukivakam” area run by Tirupati Municipal Corporation near Renigunta.

The Chief Minister, who inspected the functioning of these plants enquired about the relevant details and also about the revenue generated from the sale of dry waste and methane gas. Officials said that 750 kg of biogas is being produced from 22 tonnes of organic waste from the plant and the gas is being sold to hotels at Rs 76 per kg. He also called for making effort to convert the water being recycled into the water suitable for drinking based on a similar model being used in Singapore. Muncipal Adminitration and Urban Development Minister Dr P Narayana informed the Chief Minister that all these initiatives were part of the “Smart City” project.

The Chief Minister also suggested that vegetable waste can be taken from complexes such as hotels that buy biogas and supply back the gas to them so that they benefit from the buyback system. If the plant wants enough waste, arrangements should be made to collect it from a range of 40-50 kms, he said.
