In a swift follow-up to his press meet raising concerns over the proposed Delimitation process, Telangana CM A. Revanth Reddy has escalated the issue to the national stage by addressing an Open Letter to PM Narendra Modi, urging immediate and inclusive deliberations. He also wrote to CM’s of AP, Karnataka, Keralam & TN on the same issue.

In his letter dated April 14 (Tuesday), the Chief Minister called for building a broad political consensus on three distinct issues: women’s reservation, delimitation, and the proposed increase in Lok Sabha seats. He clarified that these matters are being incorrectly linked and stressed that women’s reservation should be implemented immediately without being tied to any increase in legislative seats.

Revanth Reddy expressed strong reservations over the proposal to increase Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850 on a pro rata population basis. He warned that such a move could severely distort the federal balance and disproportionately disadvantage southern states, including Telangana, which have effectively implemented population control and contributed significantly to economic growth.

Highlighting concerns of political and financial inequity, he noted that southern states already face disparities in financial devolution and risk further marginalisation in parliamentary representation under the proposed model. He argued that rewarding higher population growth while penalising states with better development indicators would undermine national unity and fairness.

As an alternative, the Chief Minister proposed a Hybrid model for seat expansion, suggesting that half of the additional seats be allocated on a pro rata basis, while the remaining half be distributed based on economic contribution and development performance. Emphasising the gravity of the issue, Revanth Reddy urged the Prime Minister to convene an all party meeting involving all states to arrive at a balanced and equitable solution, reinforcing the spirit of cooperative federalism in India.
