Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) announced that free degree courses will be provided to all transgenders in Telangana as part of the Equal Opportunity Plan of University, Prof. Ghanta Chakrapani, Vice Chancellor said in a press statement. Prof chakrapani has described this as a wonderful step forward in inclusive education. He said that BRAOU will be the first university to provide such an opportunity to transgenders.

Under this innovative scheme from the academic year 2025-26, any transgender with a 10+2 (Intermediate or equivalent) qualification can join any of the degree courses offered by the university. A nominal registration fee of Rs. Rs. 500 would be enough to pay only. However, it was revealed that the university has decided to waive all tuition fees.

In addition to the tuition fee waiver, it was explained that transgender students will be provided with free course material and no fee will be charged whether they attend classes or continue their studies through other media. He also stated the tools for studying will be available to them free of cost only. He said that they can get admission in any study center across Telangana and can also attend classes there.

Prof. Chakrapani reminded that we are moving forward with the aim of providing equal opportunities to all sections of the society and that this university is already fulfilling its social responsibility by providing free education to prisoners who have been sentenced to prison and to military personnel who are constantly engaged in the service of the country. It was revealed that a program has already been announced to provide free higher education to the tribals children belonging to the backward tribes of Gond, Koya, Chenchu and other communities in the state from this academic year.
